Zenit Article: Pontiff Praises Wearing the Scapular

An article from Zenit.org…

Asks Mother Mary to Wrap Us in Her Mantle

CASTEL GANDOLFO, Italy, JULY 17, 2011 (Zenit.org).- Benedict XVI today noted that the scapular is a “particular sign of union with Jesus and Mary.”

The Pope commented on the use of this devotion when he addressed Polish-speaking pilgrims gathered at the papal summer residence in Castel Gandolfo to pray the midday Angelus.

Saturday was the feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, the feast to which the scapular is linked. Simon Stock, general superior of the Carmelite Order, received the scapular in 1251, during an apparition of the Virgin, when she promised special assistance in life and in death to all those who wear it with devotion.

The word scapular originally referred to a form of clothing, which monks wore when they were working. The scapular came to symbolize Carmelite devotion to Mary; the devotion developed over time so that today, the scapular has various forms.

Benedict XVI referred to wearing the scapular as a “particular sign of union with Jesus and Mary.”

“For those who wear it, it is a sign of filial abandonment to the protection of the Immaculate Virgin,” he said. “In our battle against evil, may Mary our Mother wrap us in her mantle.”

The Holy Father’s praise of the scapular while he was greeting the Polish pilgrims brings to mind his predecessor’s own devotion to the scapular.

Blessed John Paul II spoke about the sign on the feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in 2003. The Polish Pontiff said: “Even I, from my youngest days, have worn around my neck the scapular of Our Lady and I take refuge with trust under the mantle of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of Jesus.”

291. What is Required to Receive Holy Communion?

From the Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church…

“To receive Holy Communion one must be fully incorporated into the Catholic Church and be in the state of grace, that is, not conscious of being in mortal sin. Anyone who is conscious of having committed a grave sin must first receive the sacrament of Reconciliation before going to Communion. Also important for those receiving Holy Communion are a spirit of recollection and prayer, observance of the fast prescribed by the Church, and an appropriate disposition of the body (gestures and dress) as a sign of respect for Christ.”

Therefore, clothing that would be deemed appropriate for mass for boys and men would include slacks and a collared shirt, and for girls and women would include slacks, skirts and dresses with modest hemlines and necklines, and tops that cover the shoulders. Beachwear, jeans, shorts, mini skirts, flip flops, and anything tight or revealing isn’t suitable attire for Mass.

Zenit Article: Pontiff Will Consecrate Youth to Sacred Heart

An article from Zenit.org…

MADRID, Spain, JULY 1, 2011 (Zenit.org).- Benedict will consecrate youth to the Sacred Heart of Jesus during the prayer vigil at World Youth Day.

WYD organizers announced the consecration, saying that “it is intended to accomplish the aim of every World Youth Day: that young people be brought closer to Christ.”

A catechesis to prepare youth for the consecration considers the papal message for World Youth Day in the light of the devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, as well as presenting the history and meaning of this devotion.

The Church is marking the feast of the Sacred Heart today.

“The young are the hope for the future of the Church and of humanity,” the WYD organizers affirm. “By carrying out this consecration we are saying that ‘He alone can free the world from evil and bring about the growth of the Kingdom of justice, peace and love to which we all aspire.’”

There Be Dragons – Movie Release

There is an excellent opportunity for us to influence the media in this area and around the country, as well as watch a great film. By the director of “The Mission” and “The Killing Fields” and produced by the company that did “The Passion”, opening weekend for the movie “There be Dragons” will be May 6/7/8. This is a movie about the Spanish Civil War and particularly the life of St. Josemaria Escriva, founder of Opus Dei. It will be a great influence to counter the DaVinci Code, as well as a great vocations opportunity as it so well portrays the priesthood, especially in light of another movie that is supposedly going to be released the following weekend that does not do such a great job at this.

We need to support this with a minimum of 2 ‘buyouts’–that means 200 seats roughly per buyout at $10 a ticket, to get it to come to a local theater in the Traverse City area (to be determined). Thus we need at least 400 tickets sold–ideally by next Monday (to have the greatest impact on where they will release the film–if we don’t get it by then, we still could possibly do it).

So–I need you to send this to all your personal local email lists of anyone that might be interested and have them email Holy Rosary (holyrosarycedar@gmail.com) by this next Monday, March 28, ideally. That is not really alot of tickets if we all send this out to our list. If we do generate enough support, then everyone would need to get everyone’s money in (mailed or delivered) soon after that. Also in that response, make a note if there is a time that you absolutely cannot make it of the following choices: (Friday May 6, around 7:30pm, Saturday May 7 around 7:30pm, or Sunday May 8 around 3pm). In other words, be as open as you can to any of those three times, please. Obviously you can buy multiple tickets for others.

The trailer can be seen at: www.dragonsresources.com

So please start forwarding this.
PLEASE DO NOT SEND ANY MONEY UNTIL WE ARE SURE THAT WE HAVE ENOUGH OF A RESPONSE.

God Bless,
Father Libby
